FUND COMMENTARY The third quarter tested investors' resolve. In July, investors rotated out of AI infrastructure as the debate moved from how much the large cloud operators would spend to how they would finance it. Competitive fears from China weighed on semiconductors, and the unwinding of levera ged retail positions in Korea amplifie d the fall. Geopolitics then took centre stage: the collapse of the US - Iran ceasefire disrupted key energy routes and oil prices rose by around 30% over the quarter, lifting energy and materials stocks while weighing on oil importers such as India, which s uffered renewed foreign outflows. A coordinated release of oil reserves by the Group of Seven brought little relief. With inflation pressures building, the US Federal Reserve raised rates in September for the first time since 2023 and markets anticipated a further hike before year - end. The US 10 - year Treasury yield reached its highest level since 2007, which weighed on longer - duration growth equities. In mid - September, the chief executive of Anthropic called on leading AI laboratories to pace the developmen t of frontier models, a proposal quickly endorsed by his main US peers. Semiconductor shares fell briefly on fears of slower compute demand , although no spending cuts were proposed and, in our view, slowing the release of new models is a separate question from building the inference capacity needed to monetise existing ones. Over the quarter, Korea and India lagged while Brazil, Taiwan and China outperformed. The portfolio underperformed its reference index over the quarter. At the country level, stock selection in China, India and Korea weighed on relative performance. Brazil, where our exposure is higher than that of the reference index, contributed positively to portfolio perfo rmance. Our absence from energy and materials, which benefited from the ris e in commodity prices, also detracted. ASPEED was again one of the main contributors, as guidance upgrades through the quarter extended its growth visibility into 2 027. A new programmable logic product, designed to sit alongside its server management chips , is an early sign of how it can build on its established position. B3, the Brazilian exchange, to which we added during its share price weakness earlier in the year, also contributed strongly. Trading activity was supported by the approach of October's el ections, but the more important message from our recent meeting with management was strategic: roughly half of revenues now come from recurring data, technology and fixed income activities, and new markets in trade receivables and corporate credit d erivati ves are opening. B3 is defending its position through product innovation rather than price cuts, while would - be entrants planning their own clearing infrastructure start without the netting and collateral efficiencies that B3 offers. Raia Drogasil, Brazil' s largest pharmacy chain, also contributed. Its semaglutide sales held steady despite steep price cuts, and the health regula tor clarified that online marketplaces cannot sell medicines themselves. Longer term, an ageing population underpins demand. SK hynix and Samsung Electronics were among the main detractors, with most of the decline occurring in July. SK hynix's secon d - quarter results showed realised prices lagging market prices, as long - term agreements traded near - term pricing for volume and vis ibility, while the listing of a Chinese memory maker revived competitive fears. We see this as a timing effect rather than a loss of pricing power, and high - bandwidth memory remains protected by high technological and capital barriers to entry. Demand sign als from AI laboratories have not softened. SK hynix recovered part of the decline in September and committed to returning more than half of its cumulative free cash flow for 2025 to 2027 to shareholders. Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) also detract ed. Gross margins fell for a second consecutive quarter as management prioritised volume over price. In addition, several Chinese carmakers added second - source suppliers, investors worried that Chinese energy storage demand could stall and European scrutin y of Chinese battery makers increased. Management has dismissed talk of production cuts, and CATL's scale and technology lead ership remain unmatched; the question we are testing is whether its pricing choices reflect strength or rising competition. We exit ed HDFC Bank, where a weaker deposit mix, softer results and uncertainty over the renewal of its chief executive's mandate er oded our conviction. We added to SK hynix after the July sell - off and to Chroma ATE, whose test solutions broaden our exposure to t he AI build - out beyond our largest holdings. These purchases were partly financed by reducing Delta Electronics to keep AI - related exposure within our concentration limits. In Brazil, we added to Raia Drogasil, where concerns over weight - loss drug pricing and online competition left valuation attractive, and to Nu Holdings after strong results and growing confidence in its opportunities in the mid - income segment and in Mexico. Markets are climbing a wall of worry. Higher oil prices, rising long - term interes t rates and geopolitical tension are real headwinds, and the cost of financing the AI build - out is rising with them. To date, the build - out has largely been financed by the cash flows of the hyperscalers; the next phase will rely more on their incremental AI cash flows and on debt, making it more sensitive to any disappointment in AI profitability. For now, the evidence remains supportive: model capabilities keep improving, cloud revenues keep growing and the largest builders are increasingly explicit about the returns they expect on this capital. If anything, the pacing debate removes one of the key risks to AI investment, namely that progress might stall, and a greater fo cus on safety could itself require additional compute. We therefore remain invested in bottleneck businesses of the AI supply chain, where we see the potential for strong earnings growth over the coming years. Demand may be structural, but these businesses remain cyclical, and we must be prepared to adjust their weighting decisively. Alongs ide holdings such as Nu Holdings and Bajaj Finance, whose earnings growth owes little to AI, we are strengthening our bench of quality companies outs ide technology, in India and Mexico among others. In Brazil, the presidential run - off may bring volatility, but the growth drivers of our holdings are largely structural. Our aim is to build concentrated portfolios of enduring quality growth companies, selected through years of in - depth research.
