    "abstract": "We investigate the Lorentz structure of the confinement potential through a\nstudy of the meson spectrum using Salpeter\u0027s instantaneous approximation to the\nBethe-Salpeter equation. The equivalence between Salpeter\u0027s and a\nrandom-phase-approximation (RPA) equation enables one to employ the same\ntechniques developed by Thouless, in his study of nuclear collective\nexcitations, to test the stability of the solutions. The stablity analysis\nreveals the existence of imaginary eigenvalues for a confining potential that\ntransforms as a Lorentz scalar. Moreover, we argue that the instability\npersists even for very large values of the constituent quark mass. In contrast,\nwe find no evidence of imaginary eigenvalues for a timelike vector potential\n--- even for very small values of the constituent mass.",
