30 September 2026
FUND COMMENTARY The European Central Bank, the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan all raised rates in September to reflect geopolitical unc ertainty. In Japan, bank shares fell in September. This was counterintuitive, or perhaps logical if the unspoken message was that a t least Japan's hiking cycle is approaching its end. The yen, like many other unpegged Asian currencies, weakened in the second half of September, although it was supported by ex pectations of renewed government intervention and perhaps an anticipation of a narrowing of sovereign yields. Rate hikes and the falling yen have been overwhelmingly the strongest correlates of Japan's so - called value factor, now in its fifth year, with a duration and strength that are unprecedented, according to our data. Some ques tion whether the stocks described this way deserve the label. If the pace of rate hikes and the decline of the yen ease, we expect the market to focus on more replicable factors, such as companies' inherent quality and growth. Against this backdrop, the st rongest contributors to performance during the quarter included Recruit, Hitachi and Daiichi Life. Recruit's share price reac ted strongly to excellent earnings results, which reflected increased monetisation of its Indeed.com job - search service. Hitachi's share price benefited from the market's recognition of continued strong growth in its power - grid and consulting businesses, as demonstrated in its latest earnings release. Daiichi Life also continued to grow strongly, exceeding consensus expectations at it s latest results, driven by strong overseas businesses and renewed growth in its non - life business in Japan. Higher global bond yields also provided a tailwind for the insurance sector generally, although this is no t a premise of our investment case for Da iichi Life. Detractors from portfolio performance included Disco, Murata and Tokyo Electron. Disco reported strong results, including mor e than 20% year - on - year order growth, but this was below the level the market had anticipated. Murata was affected by the global sell - off in technology stocks in July, particularly by concerns that data centre demand for its condensers might weaken. We have met the company twice, as well as its competitor TD K, and do not share this perception of weakening demand. Tokyo El ectron's latest earnings were close to a quarterly record and the company raised its forecast for the semiconductor equipment market. Nevertheless, its share price was impacted by the broader weakness in technology stocks globally. Our team held more than 100 company meetings during the quarter, including many interviews with CEOs and CFOs. We confirmed strength across the technology sector, which share prices may not yet be reflecting. We were reminded of the value of business models built on st rong brands at many consumer oriented companies and saw further examples of changes driven from within companies, rather than in response to top - down market reforms. Weakness in semiconductor stocks hurt the portfolio in July, partly because of forced selling by a la rge global hedge fund, we understand. The stocks recovered in August and then rose further in the second half of September. In September we held around 40 meetings in Japan w ith semiconductor and related companies and confirmed a demand picture that appear s stronger than the consensus view of a 'peak in 2028' allows. The story differs by company, but Ajinomoto is representative as it dominates global supply for the build - up film used on graphics processors, and shows consistent growth, margin expansion and pricing power. We maintain a large overweight in semiconductor - related stocks. The rise in global yields in September weighed on consumer stock share prices, despite continued strong earnings growth. Fast Retailing is one example - its store expansion, fas hion innovation, responsive inventory management and development of flagship stores, followed by smaller stores to penetrate new markets, have proved a consistently winning formula right through its most recent earnings release. Pan Pacific International H oldings was another struggling consumer position - amortisation related to its acquisition of the supermarket chain Olympic may have been a factor in that, but the context of r ising yields may have mattered more. Pan Pacific International Holdings' relentl ess pursuit of new and exciting store formats, which leverage its excellent supply chain, has supported its organic growth. With the company, we visited its new Robin Hood store format, which has a larger share of f resh food than its other formats and once again challenges established supermarket chains. We adjusted portfolio positions to reflect constantly changing capital costs and expectations and increased, for example, Rak uten Bank, a beneficiary of rate rises but also a company with a pre - existing gr owth story. We had another one - on - one meeting with Rakuten Bank's CEO and gained a better understanding of the locked - in savings that its merger with Rakuten's leading credit card and brokerage businesses will represent, in terms of financing costs and cas h - reserve utilisation. We also discussed the growth opportunities offered by the online bank, the card business linked to Japan's large st online mall and the online brokerage business itself. The Takaichi government's removal of the consumption tax on food in September is its latest deregulatory move; together with its 17 priority areas for public spending and the 10 - year budget allocated to them, it gives what we consider the clearest signal of any government in a decade about supporting J apan's inherent s trengths to drive growth. As the forces behind what many call value investing abate, as described above, the market's sharp reassessment of themes cont inues, from semiconductor stocks after July's fall to companies affected by artificial intelligence. Recr uit's share price has recovered from what has been called the Anthropic Shock of March, the perceived threat of displacement by artificial intelligence tools, as earnings continued to support its investment story. NEC's share price suffered in the same way , but its organic growth, especially in system integration, remains solid, and its share price has finally started to recover . Our recent meetings with companies confirmed the strength of the business models in the portfolio, across both technology and con sumer companies. We will keep focusing on the quality and growth of each business, which we believe could matter most to share prices over time.
