Abstract
An analysis on the discrete versus continuous views of kinetics of macromolecules is presented. It is shown that the discrete approach traditional to biochemistry is insufficient for understanding the dynamics of protein molecules in aqueous solution. A continous view based on the Brownian dynamics in energy landscape offers a more comprehensive description of the biological macromolecules. Two examples, one on protein folding and one on channel gating, are discussed.
